My group members thought the style is not suitable for the lyrics. And they wanted an emphasis on hand. So I tried to draw the other draft.


But the teacher said there are too many elements. We decided to give up using hand gestures and only use dots to finish our work.

Brief 11 – Research seminar

I decided to change my topic because I found there are many ways of learning English in the world. I feel very difficult to create a new one.

New Topic:
Facilitate young adults learning Taiwanese


Reason

Why did I choose this topic? I’m not good at speaking Taiwanese even though I’m a Taiwanese and my friends are not good at speaking Taiwanese. Such phenomenon is very common in my generation. Hence, Taiwanese will slowly disappear in the future.

And the most important thing is about I can’t chat with my ninety-five-year-old-grandmother. When I was small, she was the one who take care of me. So I could speak very little Taiwanese that learnt from her. However, after my family moved to another town, I stopped learning Taiwanese from her. Hence, now I can only speak Mandarin while she can only speak Taiwanese, we cannot communicate with each other, and need helps from my parents for translation. As I really want to chat with her again, as well as avoid Taiwanese becoming an endangered language, I hope to raise the awareness of young adults to learn Taiwanese.


Difficulties that Taiwanese are encountering

Most young people think learning English is useful than learning Taiwanese. Parent has the same thought so they do not teach their children speaking Taiwanese even though they are good at Taiwanese.


Research

This video explains that people in Taiwan gradually don’t speak Taiwanese and mother tongues.
“In the 1950s the government took action on promoting Mandarin in education. They prohibited speaking dialects in all schools. If you got caught speaking dialect in school you might be fined, or punished by wearing a sign around your neck saying ”I won’t speak dialect again.” Sometimes one must find a second person speaking dialects to pass on the punishment. Punished student with the sign were isolated because people were afraid to talk to them. It could be seen as the school authorities were encouraging bullying. All kinds of punishments and mocking caused by Mandarin Promotion not only damaged children’s dignity but made them think that using their mother tongues were a disgrace and that Mandarin was the classier language to use. They even corrected grandparents who didn’t speak Mandarin.”



So I did research on the teaching material for people to learn Taiwanese.

I found this website teaching Taiwanese romanization System that learner can play games to learn vocabularies, short sentences in Taiwanese.
This animation teaches kids about local food in Taiwanese so as to train their listening and speaking skills.
This is a picture book, which aims for teaching kids to read Taiwanese.

I think there are these teaching material are so great, but the learning process is just receiving from a medium.

Therefore, I decided to design a board game which is interaction-based at the same time it helps to promote young adults learning Taiwanese. I think board game is a good tool for people to learn Taiwanese as different players are required to have interaction during the game that they need to speak in Taiwanese. So players can practice simple daily conversation in Taiwanese in a happy atmosphere. I hope young people feel joyful when they learn and able to improve their Taiwanese.

After meeting, teachers said the board game is not suitable for the young people learning Taiwanese.
In fact, recently, the government encourages mother tongue education at school. They are not made a big effective. And then, I found a paper called Wandering at the Crossroad Between Language Maintenance and Language Shift by Huang-Lan SU. It’s a survey on language attitudes toward Taiwanese among 3rd-9th graders.

The reason that the students do not have passion for their mother-tongue education maybe they do not spend enough time using Taigi at school and students are unable to use the knowledge learnt from school in their daily life, in contrast, they learn more from the elders in the family.

I should find a way that integrates Taiwanese (Taigi) into life if I want to promote young people learning Taigi.
Therefore, I decided to create an app which links to another app called LINE. This is because, people in Taiwan of all age are using LINE, so creating an app which links to LINE would be a great way of building a connection between the younger generations to elders. As an example, it could be a facetime gaming, just like the MSN games in the past.

Brief 10

Subject: How to learn English in happiness

I am learning English, and try to understand people talking to me in English, but I never liked to learn English, because it is very difficult for me.
So I would like to do research on “How to learn English in happiness”.


Audience:

My target audience focuses on the adult who needs to go to work or students who are busy with their normal schoolwork. And they have very basic English skills, but they are not confident with their English or not proficient enough for communication.

Research

I want to focus on how to keep people happy during the whole learning process.
I researched and I found some websites like education websites give a few advises. For example, setting a goal and achieve it, or think about what you will benefit from your improved proficiency in English.


However, these are not what I want. I wanna focus on how to keep people happy during the whole learning process.
And then I thought about games. I searched for some apps for learning English and then I found many apps just for kids. So I think I can design an app for adults who wants to learn English happily.

I would do more research on what would make people happier when they learn English. And if they are more used to or preform to use phisical tools to learn English or using applications.
Maybe interview some students as a primary research.




Brief 13 – Charity Brief

I am focus on women rights.
Last time I designed a zine which is aborten issue with my team and this time I wanna search a aborten or women issue relation charity organisation.
I found a feminist organisation is called Young Women’s Trust which is working to achieve economic justice for young women.


Since the explanation was not clear last time, and the specific objectives and implementation of the organization are not clear, I decided to change the subject. After that, I join a group and our group members are Ellen, Jessy, Vicky, Yunni.

We found that childhood cancer has become the second leading cause of death for children in addition to accidental injuries. However, public awareness of childhood cancer is still very low. Most people think that cancer is an adult disease, and children rarely suffer from this disease, so it is easy to be ignored or misdiagnosed and delay treatment. Therefore, we decided to focus on childhood cancer.
We found 3 charities that satisfy the criteria. We contacted them by email. But only Sunshine Children Charity replied to us.


They need to improve fundraising activities and find new and innovative ways to attract supporters and fundraisers. So we need to change fundraising methods and publicity. Therefore, we have studied the past publicity and fundraising activities of this charity.

We found that previous publicity activities focused on describing the activity itself, but they did not pay attention to the particularity and advantages of the organization. It is difficult to distinguish them from other charitable projects. Secondly, many people are unaware of the urgency and severity of childhood cancer and will ignore their publicity.

After a new round of discussions, the charity staff mentioned that an event, a marathon, will be held in the near future to promote and raise funds. We hope that we can break the previous way of relying solely on website promotion and re-planning to help them find more participants.
After discussed, we believe that the main reason for lack of competitiveness is that they do not highlight the characteristics of their institutions, and they are not conspicuous among many competitors. Starting from this point, we must make some innovations while preserving the characteristics of the reformed institution.

Brief 8 – PUBLIC INFORMATION

This project requires us to present an issue that I am interested in and should be brought to the public’s attention.
I think it’s a good opportunity to learn how to finish an animation.

Because the presidential election is near and Taiwanese young people usually don’t like to vote. They always feel that every candidate is the same. And then, many netizens on the Internet urge everyone to vote. Therefore, I want to make a video that can increase the willingness of young people to vote to remind them that voting is a right and it should be cherished.

I searched the reason that people don’t vote and according to the video “Is there a good reason for NOT voting?” said:
There are three reasons that people don’t vote.

  1. My favorite has no chance.
  2. My favorite is going to win anyway.
  3. I hate all of them.

Here’s the Proferser of Business Daily, Manuela Saragosa, explaining what that means.
The professor Juang Wen-Jong of the Department of Public Policy and Management at Shih Hsin University in Taiwan mentioned the reason young adults voting rate lower than in general is due to the following reasons:

In the category of aged 24, the voting rate is 10% higher than the overall voting rate. When we look at the cost of voting, if an individual starts working and still has his or her household registration, there is a high probability that one is not living in the district. Therefore, the individual needs to pay by oneself to go back to the district where has registered for the vote. However, the older an individual, the lower the cost for voting, the higher the voting rate, because they have better socio-economic status.


And then I started to search for the same concept videos on the web.


Here is a very famous video called Dear young people, “Don’t Vote”.
The company which made this video said: “Sometimes telling a young person not to do something is the best way to get them to do it.”


I decided to make up a ridiculous story to appeal to the young for voting and let them know what happens if they don’t vote?

I design a candidates and he proposed a ridiculous policy that people should drink the water of toilet. Many young people thought this is really absurd so no one will vote him and they will not go to vote because they consider the candidate will not be elected. However, a lot of people especially old generation liked him.

Brief 7 – Critical Practice Issue

In class, Steve introduced our team to a Dutch artist, called Daan Roosegaarde. His work “Waterlicht” deeply attracted to me.
His official website said: WATERLICHT is the dream landscape about the power and poetry of water. As a virtual flood, WATERLICHT shows how high the water level could reach.
The artist demonstrating virtual floods influenced by wind and rain to remind people of the impact of climate change and about the situation of rising sea levels caused by global warming.

Discussion & Research

Brief 2 visual outcome

In the previous brief about Hastings, we showed our visual outcome that we drew a series of comics of the seagulls in Hastings. The comics showed the differences between the past and the future so as to warn people that global warming and climate change will deeply affect the ecological environment. We speculated the city that it would be flooded in 2100, which means the seagulls need to live at sea and human will become fish and live undersea.
Therefore, we decided to continue our research on the impact of climate change on animals. And then we noticed a topic about evolve.
According to an article by Scott Solomon described: “As climate change brings rising temperatures, droughts, shifting patterns of precipitation and longer growing seasons, plants and animals are evolving to keep pace. Biologists have observed squirrels and salmon developing at an accelerated pace, causing them to reproduce at a younger age. Earlier summers have caused some flowers to bloom earlier in the year. And corals are forging new relationships with microscopic algae to survive in warmer, more acidic seas.”
We researched some real cases of impacts that brought from climate change on animals.

This video which is from TED Talk called Can wildlife adapt to climate change and this part is talking about the peppered moth body colour change caused by the Industrial Revolution.

The change has been a fairly dramatic one. In 1980, the red bugs with black spots, known as nonmelanic ladybugs, constituted 90% of coastal ladybugs and just 60% of those inland, with the black bugs with red spots, or melanic ladybugs, making up the remaining 10% and 40%. But in a recent sample, Cambridge ecological geneticist Paul Brakefield says he and his team couldn’t find any area where melanic bugs made up more than 20% of the population.


Finally, we decided to make an animal encyclopedia of imaginary future animals. The encyclopedia will show the changes in animals from past to future in order to survive climate change and global warming.

Our group found that global warming has serious impacts on the environment and all living animals. because of global warming, many animals need to adapt the change by transforming their genes or appearance to enhance their viability.
we decided to pick some species that are affected by global warming as the theme of the series of posters. For the poster, we will use light-sensitive and heat-sensitive pigments to change their color in order to bring out the message of global warming.

At this stage, we chose ladybugs, as we have done research that the numbers of ladybugs are decreasing due to global warming. There are two kinds of two spot ladybugs, which are black and non-black ones. Because of climate change, now there are only non-black ladybugs, as their appearances help them to keep their body temperature from becoming too high.

We have made several dynamic posters to show the changes in a ladybug. When people touch it with their hands, it will change from black to red and make them aware of the impact of global warming on animals.

Rethinking

Due to the epidemic, many members are not in the UK, so it is difficult to communicate. I decided to give up the animal perspective and turn to think about the ocean environment.

One day I saw someone calling for the concept of ocean-friendly on social networking sites. That person is mainly emphasizing that sunscreen can cause harm to marine life, especially corals so that people hoped people could wear a diving suit without using sunscreen when they want to swimming in the ocean.

Then, I have researched this issue. According to this site(https://sustainabletravel.org/safe-sunscreen-coral-reefs/) said: “How does sunscreen cause coral bleaching? Corals are usually covered in zooxanthallae. These tiny creatures absorb light and use photosynthesis to create food for the coral. When corals become stressed due to increased water temperatures or pollution from chemicals found in sunscreen, they expel the zooxanthallae. These tiny creatures are a lifeline for the coral, and without them they lose the main food and oxygen source and also the wide array of colors that make coral so attractive. Bleached corals are more vulnerable to disease. Their growth is stunted and the damage will negatively impact the surrounding marine life. Although it is possible for some to recover, most bleached corals will starve to death. “
“But it’s not only chemical sunscreens that are harmful. Mineral sunscreens sometimes contain nano-particles which are so small that they can be absorbed by marine life. These minerals are toxic to many ocean species and can cause stress and ultimately death, even at low concentrations. In addition to the harm caused to coral, sunscreen can decrease fertility in fish; accumulate in dolphins; damage the immune systems of sea urchins and deform their young; and impair photosynthesis in algae.”

“According to the ICRI report, about 30% of the sunscreen dose in the ocean is discharged into the sea from marine activities, and 70% is discharged into the ocean through sewage.Ingredient expert.”
“Wu Peixuan added that some sunscreens contain estrogen-like chemicals (BP3). Even if you don’t go to the sea after rubbing, it may become an environmental hormone when it flows into the water after bathing. When the animals in the ocean absorb it When these chemicals arrive, they will interfere with biological physiological functions.”

And I found this news from BBC News: Palau is the first country to ban ‘reef toxic’ sun cream.
“Toxic sunscreen chemicals have been found throughout Palau’s critical habitats, and in the tissues of our most famous creatures.”We don’t mind being the first nation to ban these chemicals, and we will do our part to spread the word.”

I just realized that a little sunscreen will affect so much. But many people still don’t know about it, then I hope to make a poster to raise people’s awareness because I am a citizen living in an island country, the ecology of the ocean is closely related to us. In addition, Taiwan’s coral reefs are also facing bleaching conditions, and Taiwan’s beaches are crowded with people every summer, so I hope to remind everyone that sunscreen is not friendly for the ocean.

I tried to make a poster that sells sunscreen, but it’s actually ironic. But I felt that the effect was not so strong, so I decided to change it.

Brief 6 – Visual Statistics

During this session, we proposed a lot of questions and then are grouped by these questions and took some pictures.


After that, in class according to vary topic we analyzed and cataloged these questions.

Then I selected two relevant questions from the hobby category: 33 and 45.

It’s really strange because the two questions are very similar.
However, I can understand it because I also choose to travel but I choose to stay at home at another question.
People who choose to stay at home at question 33, and also stay at home at question 45 (two people did not appear in the 45th photo) have 7 people.

Brief 5 – Creative Provocation

Regarding issues, our group members each proposed issues that they wanted to discuss. I purposed the Abortion issue because a religious group in Taiwan promoted an anti-abortion law a while ago. As a woman, I feel anxious about it.
However, my group has only one Taiwanese besides me, so I decided to use the United States Alabama’s tough abortion law as an example to express our group’s views on this issue.

In this project, we should be looking for group members interested in the same area. I decided to choose the sixth – A Platform For Joy which I very interested in.

I purposed an idea that collects ticket receipts to make interact art. In my experience, I realized the train ticket receipt is similar to the train ticket so many people confused easily and throw out the receipt finally. I think this is a waste of paper. I planed to do a color chip wall by train ticket receipts.



Rethinking

After the initial presentation, we interviewed some people who were waiting for the train in Epsom station and asked them some questions about opinions on Epsom station. According to the interview, the young group didn’t care about the train station’s environment. Families with children advised adding some facilities for their children to play. An elderly woman suggested to have more flowers everywhere on the platform.

It is important to notice that a boy thought the chairs made him not comfortable and cold when he was waiting for the train in winter and he hoped the chairs could be changed to sofas. And he also proposed a good idea. He believes people don’t interact with others when the chairs are positioning back to back. So he hoped the chairs to be designed to face each other.
He gave us useful an inspiration. Therefore, we decided to redesign and focus on the chair design.

This is a horse riding wall painting at Epsom square.
Horse racing and a large number of horse farms that are the unique advantages of Epsom.


Therefore, our team decided to design the chair into the shape of a horse.




Final Critique

In the Final Critique Session, tutors give us some feedback.
The first, the chair we designed is not suitable for a public place because it is furniture design.
And then, we need to promote people communicating at the station.


In order to promote people’s interaction, we research some interactive design.

These works are very funny. We found out change stuff’s shape, angle, or color will make people feeling funny.


We searched for the special pigments which will change color as the temperature and then painting the stools. We think is a good way for fun that someone sits the stools and then when he or she leaving will find out the color change.


We made some chairs by paper and foam soft board and did an experiment.

And then our group members each designed the pattern for stools.
We all used horse patterns for design.

I combined the horse and flower patterns together, and then used the mosaic tile method to make the shape of a horse.


The design below is from Yunni. Colored windows of the church inspired her. Finally, we decided to use her work.
