Brief 3 – Rethinking

After that time, I began to research on the posters under the category called illustrator. And then I am really interested in the Tom Gauld’s style.

I analyzed it and found out his style has simple elements like the cycles, triangles, and lines, which I like it so much. He also always draws stick men without eyes, ears, nose, and mouth.

There is a book called “Visible Signs: An Introduction to Semiotics in the Visual Arts”, which has analyzed his works, stating he is good at using body language and visible signs to express his concept.

Tom also mentioned in the interview that his works are “a casual reduction of visual keys into a more rudimentary drawing style.”
In this book, the writer pointed out his works were done by adding simple elements on signs, which makes his work cuter and easy to understand.

elderly people

In this work, he used the sign “elderly people”, and then added simple imagery, like the flag to show the element of revolution.

What I like about his work is that the image can bear different meanings by keep adding new elements to the original one. It inspired me.
Therefore, I decided to do a symbolized menu. I always have a hard time ordering from the English menu without pictures. Like the road and traffic signs, I plan to create a system of signs to help people order food.

Final Critique

After the Final Critique Session, I received some feedback. One is about deciding what kind of restaurant menu should be made. Another one is about researching how other illustrators draw the signs about food.
On the other hand, a few classmates also gave me some feedback and told me that they can understand at a glance when they saw my work because they have the same life experience as me.

Visual outcome

Regarding the choice of the restaurant category, there are two possible solutions. The first one is that I design a Taiwanese noodles restaurant menu and the audience is British. The second one is that I design a British breakfast restaurant menu and the audience is international students.
I decided to design a Taiwanese noodles restaurant menu. The main reason is that it is familiar to me and I could deal with it easily.
In order to solve the problems caused by cultural differences, I researched many Asian restaurants’ menu and its noodle icon. In my experience, the noodle icon usually shows 3 straight lines, a side bowl and a pair of chopsticks. It is a very common sign. However, I have searched many noodle’s icons and I noticed a notably different thing is that noodle is usually drawn by 3 curved lines. In order to make clients clear at a glance, I decided to use the symbols they are familiar with to make the design.

Brief 3 – Catalogue an Archive

Reasearch

I found a lot of posters from the typo circle. I think they are interesting and then I took photos of them in the archive session.
After that, I searched on the official website to see the detailed information, like who designed it and what is it about.

The organization gave speeches from famous designers, illustrators, and typographers.
Before each speech, there was a poster introducing the content of the particular speech.

I tried to organize these posters. According to their content of each speech.

What surprised me was that all the posters I took pictures of were categorized under the same category. The one for illustrators.

And then I was thinking about what I can do with these posters.

Some ideas

Initial Ideas Session

After the Initial ideas session, I got some feedback. In short, I need to do more research so that I can learn something from the materials that I look at, such as the concepts about typography.

Brief 2 – First Cut

As preparing for the project, we visited Hastings on 26 September.
Our theme is climate change, so we decided to interview the local people and asked some questions.

The main difficult thing is that there are a lot of visitors and we couldn’t found the local people. The other things are that the interviewees refused to record and they are too young to reply to the questions about environmental change.

However, we were allowed to jot down notes during the interview. We realized the amount of garbage and lizards on the beach in Hastings have dropped in recent years.

Ideas

After the trip, our group researched the Hastings environmental issue news or essay.

Climate change is one of the key challenges facing Hastings. Over the next 50 years, climate projections show that past, current and future greenhouse gas emissions will influence the climate for decades. So alongside efforts to reduce emissions everyone need to prepare for the climate change that people cannot avoid.(Hastingsobserver.co.uk, 2019)

And we found a essay about seagulls which described people and seagulls live in harmony .
Gull expert Tim Mckenzie, set up the National Gull Rescue and Protection Group, which aims to help the injured birds and get them back into the air. The group is working with other charities around the UK and it is trying to raise the money for a gull rescue centre. It has half a dozen gulls in ‘hospital’, many of which are road accident victims. Much to our surprise, through their efforts, seagulls and humans have gradually built harmonious relationship in Hastings.(Hastingsobserver.co.uk, 2010)

And they also worried about that the rising sea level will threaten seagull survival.

The final work

Therefore, we drew a series of comic of the seagulls in Hestings between the past and future to warn people global warming and climate change will deeply affect the ecological environment.
We speculated the city and land will be flooded in 2100 so the seagulls have to live at sea and human will become fish that they can alive under sea.

Brief1 – International Pedagogy

My name is Ellen. I come from Taiwan.

Taiwan is a small country. However, Taiwan’s average annual rainfall is as high as 2,510 mm, which is abundant, equivalent to 2.5 times the world’s average annual rainfall of 973 mm.

When people mention the country, they maybe think of pearl milk tea which is made of milk tea and black tapioca balls.

When it comes to culture, Taiwan is a multicultural environment country because of its history and location. The Spanish, the Dutch, the Qing Dynasty of China, and the Japanese have ruled us before. Therefore, you can visit a lot of places like Zeelandia, Fortress San Domingo, Taipei City Wall-North Gate and Presidential Office (Former names Government-General of Taiwan) which were built by these countries.

Project 4 – summary – About 10 weeks pre-sessional course

I have been studying the pre-sessional course at UCA for 2 months. During this period, I deeply realized the different living habits between the UK and Taiwan and the local teaching methods are also different from Taiwan.

The tutors make a lot of effort to interact with the students and increase their range of abilities. I learned how to finish academic writing, how to analyze artwork, and how to do a presentation.

(Hannah, 2019)

I’m very glad to have studied on the pre-sessional course. I think this experience has been very helpful to me.

Project 4 – summary – Better Future in my field

My major is Graphic Design.
In the beginning, I thought this field was the most consumed because we use up posters and other consumables very quickly. Even if use digital media, it usually causes pollution through the usage of electricity.

However, I found a new approach could reduce ink and water consumption which is called ecobranding.
This concept is from Sylvain Boyer who is a Paris-based creative director.

I think this idea is simply and could change our approach of design. It will make the the world more sustainable.

Project 4 – summary – London Trip

I was a pity to this trip because I missed the exhibition.
When I arrived the Tate Modern, I saw the price list of tickets and then I gave up.

BSL TOUR: OLAFUR ELIASSON IN REAL LIFE

After return to school, I browse my classmate’s pictures about the exhibition – BSL TOUR: OLAFUR ELIASSON IN REAL LIFE. I was regret that I didn’t visit it. These Interactive Designs really appeals to me!
If I have a chance for London again, I will visit the exhibition.

Bankside Gallery

Fortunately, I visited Bankside Gallery and I found the fascinating paintings which attract me. I enjoyed this atmosphere of art.
It’s not a quite disappointed outcome.

Project 4 – a trip plan

The first place I wanna visit is “In the Studio (NATALIE BELL BUILDING LEVEL 2 EAST)”. There are collected a lot of works and I especially want to see Bridget Riley artworks.
I am fond of the abstract patterns made by Riley. I believe these pictures could inspire my works in the future.

The second is David Annesley artworks.
Although his works do not belong to my area, I am attracted to his abstract sculptures and colour which give the static sculpture a sense of movement. I think through observe his artworks and I could learn how to make my graphic design work more vivid.

Finally, I decide to the Fashion and Textile Museum to see the exhibition Textile Arts of Peru.
For me, see the collections different from my major could explore ideas.

Project 3 – summary – How to write project proposal

Last two weeks ago, I saw a documentary film which talk about a famous American graphic designer Paula Scher.

Paula Scher

Her style of design deeply attracted me and her works trigger our team to finish the poster. When I saw that she wrote down the words about her life experience and made them around her self portrait, I started to have some ideas.
We could imitate her idea but the different thing is that we decided to invite the young victims of cyberbullying to write their experience and afterwords, we will finish our interactive poster.

Project 3 – summary – a trip to Margate

Two weeks ago, I went to Margate. I visited the Turner Contemporary and saw a lot of photos. However, they didn’t appeal to me, because the topic didn’t contact my project.

I felt pity even wanted to alter the topic. Nevertheless, I could change my mind to enjoy this trip first. Accordingly, I found that everything was different. I noticed these exhibits gradually became interesting, yet my favorite thing is the Shell Grotto.

Shell Grotto

I was fond of the shell decoration and abstract mosaics. While I entered the cave, I always became aware of a strange atmosphere due to this place might as a mystery religious region.
The most interested thing is nobody knows who made the shell grotto.
